| There is a ship in full sail near a stretch of shore, on
which is a palm tree, with a plow and spade at its base. The
palm plays an important part in the life of the people of
Liberia. The best known palms are tbe borassus or fan palm.
The state emblem of the Ukraine hears a marked resemblance to the coat of arms of the USSR. Byelorussia partakes of the Soviet symbols, the oak branch signifying wooded country. Lebanon's coat of arms is quite simple and features the famous cedar of Lebanon. Turkey's crescent and star are of ancient and historic meaning as symbols. Iran adds another lion to the animals that appear on the United Nations' emblems. Denmark's coat of arms is among the oldest now in use, and its shield is rich in Nature symbolism, representing its several colonies. Egypt features the crescent and the stars, symbolizing the fact that it was long apart of the Turkish Empire. Crossed swords for courage, and the palm for life, peace and security, make up the simple coat of arms of Saudi Arabia, palm, the bamboo palm and another species producing the valuable piassava fiber, which is used for heavy industrial brooms. Bird life in Liberia is varied and includes egrets, herons, ibises, hornbills, eagles, pigeons and wild ducks. The pigmy hippopotamus is found only in Liberia. Many species of the fauna of this country have been pictured on their postage stamps. Byelorussia and the Ukraine have State emblems bearing a marked resemblance to the coat of arms of the USSR, of which these republics are members. The central feature is the hammer and sickle, symbol of the union of workers and peasants. Forming a circular design are stalks of bearded wheat. In the emblem of Byelorussia, clover blossoms are interspersed among the wheat, and a branch of oak leaves and acorns is used on republic, one side. Forests constitute the most important national wealth of that a portion of which is known as "Polessye," meaning "wooded country." The rich wheat fields of the Ukraine, extending along the southwestern borders of the Soviet Union, were among the principal objectives of the German attack on Russia in 1941. The collective farmers sabotaged, in all possible ways, the German attempts to ship grain and other vegetable products to Germany. They inaugurated the scorched earth policy by burning the grain in the fields. |
