The Newberry, South Carolina area offers many options for off road cyclists. A Newberry park, a nearby national forest, and a portion of a state wide trail system give bicyclists great opportunities to enjoy their sport. Some trails are also open to hikers and horseback riders. Here are some popular bike trails to try in the Newberry area.

Lynch’s Woods Park is located just east of Newberry off Highway 76. The 276 acre park contains 7.5 miles of single track mountain bike trail. The trail winds through the wooded property and is of moderate difficulty, climbing short hills and crossing several small streams. Hikers may also use the trail. In addition, a three mile section of the Palmetto Trail is found in Lynch’s Woods Park. This state wide recreational trail will cover 425 miles when completed and will connect the mountains of the Upstate to the coast. The trail is designed to be multi use and is open to hikers, bikers, and equestrians. The opening of this section of the Palmetto Trail has attracted a wider group of users to the park. Lynch’s Woods Park is open year round and there is no fee to use the trails.

Another section of the Palmetto Trail may be found in nearby Sumter National Forest. The 36 mile portion is known as the Enoree Passage. The trail crosses two creeks, skirts three small fishing lakes, and crosses an 80 foot bridge that offers scenic views of the Enoree River below. The multi use trail is open to hikers and horseback riders as well as bikers.

The Sumter National Forest also has a challenging area of trails designed for mountain bikes, motorcycles, and all terrain vehicles. There are 23 miles of trails in interconnecting loops, allowing riders to easily choose trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels. The trails are located near the town of Whitmire, off Highway 276. There is a day use fee of $5 per motorbike or ATV to use the trails. This area of trail is open most of the year, from the end of March to January 1 of the following year.

Bikers are also welcome to use the Buncombe Horse Trail within the Sumter National Forest. The 31 mile trail winds across forested hills and valleys. There are several points of interest along the trail including old cemeteries and plantation sites. The trail is open year round, and there is a $3 day use fee. To access the Buncombe Horse Trail, turn onto Forest Service Road 358 off Highway 66.

Biking is a great way to enjoy the outdoors in this area of South Carolina. These trails are popular destinations for recreational bike riders.
