The typical BMX facility has a dirt track with rollers, jumps, and banked curves. Racers need a BMX style bike that is strong, lightweight, and single speed with working brakes. So that there are no bike parts that could fall off onto the track, no reflectors, chain guards, or kick stands are allowed. Most BMX bikes are 20 inches, but some races allow 24 inch cruiser bikes for taller riders. Other equipment that riders would need include bike pads, covers for handlebar ends, and a helmet. Riders may choose a full face helmet or a helmet with a mouth guard. In order to race, riders must have a current membership in one of the U.S. sanctioning bodies. The ABA (American Bicycle Association) is the world’s largest sanctioning body. The NBL (National Bicycle League) is the other sanctioning body. Riders will race other riders in their own age group and skill level. Boys and girls often ride in the same races. Typical age categories would be age 10 and under, ages 11-15, ages 16-29, and riders over age 30. Races may be limited to 20 inch bikes only or may include the 20 inch and 24 inch cruiser bikes. The two Atlanta area facilities that are affiliated with the ABA are located in Cobb County, on the north side of town. Wild Horse Creek Park is located at 3820 Macedonia Road in Powder Springs, Georgia. The Noonday Park track is located at 489 Hawkins Store Road NE in Kennesaw. The entrance to that facility is off Shallowford Road. The two facilities that are associated with the NBL are in the south metro area. Sandy Ridge BMX is located on Keys Ferry Road in McDonough. Peachtree City BMX is located in the William L. Davis Facility at 201 McIntosh Trail in Peachtree City. Racers at these facilities can participate in local races and state races. Additionally, they could qualify for Southeast regional and national races. There is also a professional racing circuit. BMX racing became a new Olympic medal sport in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. BMX races run most of the year and are an exciting sport to watch. |
