Skiing and snowboarding are incredibly fun sports that combine an excellent workout with the high speed exploring of snow covered mountains. While you would think that simply leaning, bending and twisting while sliding down a mountain at high speeds would not burn that many calories, skiing and snowboarding are in fact some of the most intense workouts you can get.

In both skiing and snowboarding, your feet are affixed to a board that slides over snow. The edges of the board are sharp but the bottom is super smooth and slides over the snow effortlessly. By digging and sliding the edges against the snow you can control how the boards slide. This is done indirectly by controlling your balance on skis and snowboards. For skiing, you steer by shifting your weight to the leg that you want to be downhill. This can put tremendous pressure on that leg if you are going fast and this is where the exercise part comes in. Snowboarding too requires you to lean and put just the right amount of pressure on the board to carve a path down the mountain. The exact nature of ski and snowboarding control canīt really be explained as once you get good at it, it becomes second nature and you donīt even think about it.

Alpine sports can be extremely dangerous. Careening at high speeds through trees over snowy or icy ground can be recipe for disaster if you are not properly skilled. Learning to ski or snowboard can be a difficult task. What makes it even more frustrating is that skiing and snowboarding isnīt really fun until you are good at it. Once you have the skills and confidence to relax and have fun, skiing and snowboarding can be one of the most fun experiences you can have.

Kids tend to pick up on these activities faster than adults. A child can become a proficient skier in an afternoon while it may take an adult a few days of falling on cold wet snow to get it right. Some people hypothesize this is because children have a lower center of gravity than adults but it could be that children just seem to have a quicker grasp at learning more intangible subjects like balance control than adults who over think things instead of just feeling them out.

Skiing and snowboarding usually requires a lift ticket to ride the ski lift chair up to the top of the mountain. These tickets can be quite expensive so a day of skiing can set you back quite a bit of money. If you ski often you will want to look for coupons or multi day discounts to get a more affordable rate.
