Which are the characteristics of great tennis drills? Why is one tennis drill boring and flat and the other one is exhilarating? Players sometimes practice one particular exercise time after time again and recognize that their skills may not be improving. In other cases, players try every new tennis drill they read about but still are rarely getting the desired results. How can we be certain that the drills we´ve been practicing are good?

The top tennis drills display certain qualities that are needed for tennis players to improve. We can find these core characteristics in every single great tennis drill. If tennis coaches can apply these qualities to their own tennis drills, they are well on their way to further improve their players´ performance. So what are these key properties that tennis drills should display?

The first goal of every great drill is target a particular area. Tennis players need to know what skill they would like to improve to be able to deploy the perfect tennis drills. First, players must identify weaknesses in their game. Naturally, tennis instructors are a great help in this matter. Players have to ask themselves if they plan to be better net players or they rather have a great serve. Of course, most people want to improve everything at the same time. This, however, is just not realistic. You should only give attention to one thing at any given time. Second, the tennis instructor should pick the sort of exercises that target that given area or skill. If you don´t understand what you intend to improve, no tennis drill could possibly help.

The next important sign of great tennis drills is simulating match situations. Tennis is a competitive game in the end where players want to win. Practicing forehand cross courts for two hours just isn´t very effective and it´s also boring. In match situations, the ball never comes at you the same way twice. Tennis players who practice one kind of shot will struggle in match situations. There is no replacement for good situational tennis drills.

Finally, it is essential for tennis players to have fun while they´re practicing. Each of us will burn out if practice becomes a chore. Tennis drills should provide excitement and fun. The manner in which great tennis drills do this is by allowing players to work towards an objective. Whether players cooperate or compete against one another to achieve this specific goal doesn´t really matter. What´s important is always that players feel satisfied when they accomplish this goal.
