The 1972 Wimbledon Championships were met with much anticipation. The tournament is split up into several different events. There is a men’s singles event and a women’s event. These events are the most prestigious events of all of the events at Wimbledon. The doubles events feature men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. On top of those “seniors” events are juniors events. The juniors events include boys’ singles and girls’ singles. The “seniors” winners of the year before included John NewCombe and Evonne Goolagong Cawley in the singles events. The doubles events were won by the duos of Roy Emerson/Rod Laver and Rosemary Casals/Billie Jean King and Billie Jean King/Owen Davidson.

The winner of the men’s singles event was not able to advance deep enough to compete for the singles championship in 1972, but Stan Smith and Ilie Nastase did manage to advance to the finals. The match between these two players was a great one, going to 5 sets. The first set was won by Nastase 6-4. Stan Smith bounced back with victories in the next two sets, winning each set 6-3. Nastase was not ready to go down yet and won the 4th set 6-4 to force a 5th and final set. The final set went to extra points before Stan Smith managed to pull out the championship victory, winning the last set 7-5.

Billie Jean King and Evonne Goolagong Cawley had another battle a year after facing each other in the Wimbledon women’s doubles finals. In the previous women’s doubles finals King managed to walk away with a victory and once again bested Goolagong Cawley in 1972. King looked very impressive and managed to win each set by a score of 6-3.

King was not done with her singles title and went on to advance to the finals of the women’s doubles finals. She teamed up against Betty Stove and played against Francoise Durr and Judy Tegart-Dalton. She was once again victorious as she and Stove put away their opponents by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

The men’s doubles finals featured Stan Smith, the winner of the singles final. Smith played with Erik van Dillen and they played against Bob Hewitt and Frew McMillan. While Smith managed to pull out the victory in the singles tournament, he was not able to win in the finals of the doubles tournament. Hewitt and McMillan won the match 6-2, 6-2, 9-7.

Rosemary Casals and Ilie Nastase played against Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Kim Warwick in the mixed doubles finals. Casals and Nastase won 6-4, 6-4.

The juniors finals were won by Bjorn Borg and Ilana Kloss. Borg won his match 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 and Ilana Kloss won his tournament 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to become the boys’ and girls’ singles champions.
