| Many students believe writing a master's thesis will be a
breeze. They see fellow graduate students suffering from
writer's block and smugly assure themselves that it will not
happen to them. But, eventually, it starts. The anxiety and the procrastination. The sleepless nights. Soon it's a struggle to get even a sentence down on paper. Days, even weeks, go by without any real progress. Then, the voice starts in, the voice that says, “You can't do this.” At this point, many graduate students throw in the towel. They become so overwhelmed by the enormity of the project before them that they never finish their master's thesis. Don't let that happen to you. Everyone encounters difficulties when writing a thesis or dissertation, but these difficulties can be overcome. First, remember to use your thesis adviser as a resource. Your adviser probably has plenty of “war stories” about graduate school and can be an invaluable source of advice when you “hit the wall” with your own work. Also, do not discount the support that your peers can provide. Join a thesis writing support group. Support group members give one another feedback and encouragement and set deadlines for one another. Students who sign up for these groups have a high rate of success in completing their master thesis and producing top-notch, publishable writing. Individually, you can give yourself a boost by setting out a work schedule with specific goals.. Promise yourself a reward for meeting writing milestones. For instance, tell yourself you can take a weekend getaway or spa day—but only after finishing chapter three! Above all, refuse to listen to the voice that says you cannot do it. Many before you have successfully completed their thesis. You can do it too! |
