Anger Management: An Overview |

| If we were to define anger management, we would say that it
is the usage of therapeutic techniques in order to help a
person control their anger or aggression. In fact, in many
countries, a person who has problems with controlling their
temper will usually be court ordered to take anger
management classes. While this is a very accurate
definition, it is also very generalized, as there is a lot
that goes on during therapy in order to control one´s
emotions. For example, many psychologists will focus on
certain aspects that will help to not only control your
anger, but to also allow you to use it to express yourself
in a healthy way. Keep in mind that anger is a real emotion,
and therefore is needed in certain circumstances as a way of
venting. The problem is that some people do not know how to
control their temper, which in turn can lead to serious
consequences. These consequences do not only affect the
person who has difficulties in controlling their feelings,
but also affects those at which the anger has been directed
at. In fact, in nearly all cases, that anger can also affect
people who have been indirectly affected by uncontrolled
rage. One example is in a family where a husband or wife has
difficulties in controlling their feelings when
communicating with their partner. Not only will the partner
be affected, but the child who is witnessing this will also
be negatively affected. Many people who suffer from uncontrollable anger are consistently in a state of denial and acknowledgment. In other words, while they deny that they need help, once they calm down and realize what has just happened, they secretly feel angry with themselves for not being able to control their emotions. So, to believe that people who have problems in controlling their temper are always in a state of denial, in most cases, this belief is incorrect. Anger management classes can therefore be a very powerful way to help these people to effectively control their emotions. The whole approach that many anger management classes take is to focus on the consequences that can derive from anger, and then how to spot the warning signs that can trigger rage. So what these classes aim to achieve is to help these people understand exactly what they are feeling before they become angry, once they become angry, and what consequences can be derived from that emotional state. By taking this approach, many people who have suffered from uncontrollable anger and aggression have been able to utilize this information to diffuse their inbuilt time-bomb before the clock even begins to tick down. In addition, they have also learned that losing one´s temper is not necessarily a bad thing when it is used in a healthy manner.
