How To Get Into Sailing

People have long known and experienced the wonders of sailing. If you are inexperienced or a beginner however, it can seem that the skills would be difficult to learn. The fact is anyone can become a sailor.

Sailing is different to other forms of boating as it uses the resources of Mother Nature rather than the fossil fuels harvested from her belly. While there are many facets to know about sailing, the first point to understand when you’re considering getting into sailing is to take it slow. And start small.

Don’t assume that a forty-foot yacht is going to be less challenging or dangerous simply because of its size. A twelve-foot sailfish may not impress any friends, but it’s small enough to teach the basics and help you become familiar with the patterns of the wind and how to harness that power to maximum efficiency.

One question many beginners ask when getting into sailing is how do I start? Many places will rent sailboats and give lessons on the basics such as the different types of sails, rigging, steering, tacking etc. If you can rent a sailboat to begin learning this wonderful art and activity, then you will also have a better understanding of the type of sailboat you may prefer to own. Ultimately, the best advice when you’re ready to start sailing is to learn the basics, try it out a few times, and see if the open water calls to you in the middle of the night. If it does, then you’re a true sailor at heart.
