| A marine anchor, commonly made of pure metals that weigh
several tons, is used to attach the ship to the bottom part
of the water or sea beds acting as a weight keeping the ship
still in its position. It is holding up to sea bed to
prevent the ship from moving. There are two major classes of
marine anchors; temporary and permanent anchors. Permanent
anchors are rarely moved, holding the ship still, and will
require services from expert field to move or maintain the
vessels. Generally, permanent anchors are used on building a
mooring. Temporary anchors are anchors that can be hoist
easily if ever the ship will go on sailing. There are wide
varieties of marine anchors available, of different sizes,
shapes, applications, designs and weights. Some of the types
of marine anchors are; fluke anchors, plow anchors,
grapnels, and marine claw anchor. Fluke anchor is the most common type of marine anchors from mid to large scale sizes. It is also called as 'Danforth' that are characterized by a flat spades rotating independently of the anchor to dig to the bottom and prevent the marine anchors being dragged. This is commonly used in sandy bottom rather than digging in rocky or full of sea grass bottom. On the other hand, plow anchors are very much alike to an agricultural plow. Plow anchors dig in to the sea beds as the boats pulls. A grapnel anchor is similar to a grappling hook. Grapnel anchors are best suitable for small water with a vessel that lack storage space for large anchors and does not require increased holding power. Lastly, the most appropriate anchors for marine ships, the marine claw anchor. A marine claw anchor has a wide flat claw attached to the beam. The claw embeds itself to the sea beds while being dragged by the beam. Similar with fluke anchors, claw anchors have problems embedding the claw in grassy bottom. The primary advantage of claw anchor over the fluke anchor is the ability to hold and maintain even with strong winds or changing currents. In addition, claw anchors are heavier than any other marine anchors. Marine claw anchors can be able to set rapidly and reliably at the bottom and in most sea beds. It is usually available in high strength and durable designs to hold larger vessels. But it has limited holding power in soft sand and mud. It is also inexpensive as compare to other types. It cost not that much yet it can guarantee you with reliable and durable capability. In determining the appropriate marine claw for safe anchorage, you must consider the several factors. First and foremost, consider the type or kind of sea beds, it could be made up of hard clay, rocks, or soft muds. As mentioned earlier, fluke and marine claw anchor is not appropriate for that type of sea beds. So you must consider other type that would better be suitable than the other two mentioned. You must also consider the tides, the current, and the wind as well as drag indications and bearings. And all of these must be first consider in choosing the best and safest anchors. |
