TYPES OF SAILBOATS |

| Sailboats are far from being the same and there are a
variety of types in use. The basics however still apply to
all, as far using the wind and sails to power them, but
their unique features offer benefits to suit personal
preferences. Size is not the defining characteristic that separates sailboats on the water. While different size sailboats have different features and provide its passengers with an array of different comforts, it’s not size that really matters. The most common differences sailboats have is the number and position of masts, though in recent years, that is no longer the only distinction. Recent technology has introduced the number of hulls as an important consideration when determining what distinguishes one ship from another. Multiple hull sailboats are also more commonly referred to as catamarans. These offer greater stability than monohull counterparts due to the wide spread between the hulls which allows them to cruise at greater speeds. Modern catamarans also have spacious areas below deck for many purposes, including storage, sleeping quarters and shelter. Three-hulled sailboats are known as trimarans. The monohull sailboats that most people are familiar with usually have a single mast and are also known as sloops. This mast supports two sails, the mainsail, aft and the headsail or jib, which is forward. The catboat, mainsail at the front of the ship and the cutter which holds the mast aft are two variations of the sloop. Single mast sailboats are easier to control and maintain and are the most common for schools and lessons. Two-mast sailboats usually start at forty feet and can run up to as large as one-hundred fifty feet long. They are designed for longer voyages and usually have several hands on staff for cruises and include types such as the schooner, ketch, and yawl. Three-mast sailboats build on the concept of the two-mast, and are mostly associated with the classic historical sailing ships. |
