Chief McIntosh and his family lived on Acorn Bluff Plantation during the first quarter of the 19th century. The plantation was worked by a number of slaves owned by McIntosh. In addition to the plantation, McIntosh operated an inn and tavern as well as a ferry across the Chattahoochee River. McIntosh was the son of a Scottish captain in the British army and a full-blooded Creek Indian mother from an important clan. An influential man in both the Indian and white cultures, he fought for the U.S. in the First Seminole War. McIntosh became aligned with the Lower Creeks and was influential in the negotiation of treaties between the Creek Indian nation and state and local governments. Chief McIntosh made serious enemies during the time of the mass removal of Creek and Cherokee Indians from Georgia, in what became known as “The Trail of Tears”. McIntosh signed away Indian land in a treaty, and Upper Creek warriors carried out an order to kill McIntosh and another chief on May 1, 1825. The plantation house was burned and most of the livestock was destroyed. Displays and signage in the park explain the events that took place there. McIntosh Reserve Park is popular with hikers and equestrians. The park offers more than 14 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. Two of the more popular trails are the Beaver Pond Trail and the River Trail, which leads hikers to some scenic overlooks along the Chattahoochee River. The park’s large open meadow is one of the favorite places in the area to fly model planes. Many young visitors enjoy the Spray and Splash water park area during the summer months. There are two ponds in the park and fishing is allowed. Visitors can see the grave of McIntosh onsite as well as a log cabin replica similar to the one where the McIntosh family lived. Picnic shelters and campsites are also available. McIntosh Reserve Park hosts a number of annual events including an Easter Carnival and Egg Hunt, a Fall Festival, a Shrine Car Show, and holiday visits with Santa. McIntosh Reserve Park is located two miles west of Whitesburg, Georgia off State Highway 5. The property is owned and maintained by Carroll County. The park is open daily year round. Summer hours are 8am-8pm and winter hours are 8am-7pm. Admission is free. |
