| Defensive driving does not mean you are sensitive about your
driving skills and cry or throw your coffee cup at someone
if they make a comment about your driving. Defensive driving
is defined as being aware of instances on the road before
they occur. It is about being aware of your surroundings and
reacting to them before they happen to avoid an accident. You are not alone on the road and drivers need to drive knowing that. Being a rude driver and expecting everyone to get out of your way while honking and flipping people off is not being a defensive driver and boarders on road rage which is against the law. More and more laws are now being passed about road rage, so watch out rude drivers! The standard for Safe Practices of Motor Vehicles defines defensive driving as, "driving to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others." The old adage your mother used to tell you that if your friends jumped off a bridge would you to also applies to driving. Just because you see a reckless driver speeding down the road does not mean you go there too. This is where police officers come in. You ever said to yourself, "Where is a cop when you need one." Well that is what they are there for. People that do not drive defensively and following the laws of the road will eventually be found. That is why it is so important to be a defensive driver because not everyone else is and you have to watch out for them. A new driver will be required to take defensive driving courses when they learn to drive. It is then followed up behind the wheel when they are learning how to physically drive in a car. You can follow it up at home too when you are driving with them. As they learn they will ingrain in them that being a defensive driver might save their life some day. If a person has had an incident that involves a traffic accident of reckless driving then a judge may require a driver to take a defensive driving course before they are able to drive again. Or the judge may give them a certain amount of time to complete the course and bring proof back to the court or their license will be taken away. In teaching a teenager to drive it is imperative that you instill in them the reason why defensive driving is so important. Teenagers already feel invincible and make reckless decisions at times. You don't want them to make a choice as a driver that could cost them their lives or someone else because they feel invincible behind a wheel. Being a good example to your children from their youth can show them why it is important to be a good driver. Use instances on the road to show they why it is so important. Defensive driving is vital to the safety of all drivers on the road. Be aware of your surroundings and realize you are not the only person on the road. A person's carelessness can cost more than a ticket. Many times it can cost someone their lives. |
