Motor homes or RVs have their own unique specifications for batteries which require that you know a bit about what is required of them as well as the options available. Your requirements will not be met completely with an automotive starting battery which has to supply lots of electricity in a small amount of time so that you can start your automobile. You may, of course, have a couple of these to turn on of your RV however this will not be sufficient for your other requirements. Known as 'Marine' batteries these specific batteries are in fact a mixture of starting batteries and genuine deep cycle batteries and may not be completely suitable for an RV´s needs.

Motor homes operate best with true deep cycle batteries that are capable of storing a substantial amount of power, discharge this electricity in a deep fashion and then recharge again and again. There are essentially three kinds of deep cycle batteries of which the most common are the Lead Acid Flooded Cells. These particular types of batteries run by using thick lead plates that are flooded by an acid electrolyte solution and are available in different sizes. The key advantages of these particular batteries are that they´re powerful, long-lasting and relatively inexpensive. The disadvantage is that they create harmful gases when they are charging and the battery compartment must be ventilated. Also the electrolyte liquid, which can spill, is acidic and must be topped of occasionally.

Gel Cell Batteries function in precisely the same way as Lead Acid Flooded Cells but the electrolyte is in the form of a gel and not a liquid. Since of this, little upkeep is required and the odds of dangerous gases being produced during charging are minimal. The disadvantages are that these batteries are fairly costly, slow charging and easily damaged.

Absorbed Glass Mat batteries have a glass mat that´s placed between the electrolyte solution and the lead plates and the electrolytes are sucked up by the glass mat material. Several of the benefits of these particular kinds of batteries are as follows: the battery will not spill and doesn´t produce harmful gases while charging, they don´t necessitate ventilation, and they can be installed in remote parts of the RV because they do not need to be easily reached for maintenance. The drawback is that they´re pricey and also prone to damage however they are longer lasting than gel cells.
