| I planned on concentrating on the learning of fresh new
concepts today, but inspration hit me and knew I should tell
you all about it. Here is what I am thinking: I have been putting in some crazy hours lately and I decided to give myself the day to kind of take it easy, sit back and watch a few DVD’s (all on persuasion, copywriting, marketing etc.)and MP3’s. After deciding it was time to take a a break for a few minutes, I headed downstairs to go out and pick up to see if I had any mail while my lunch was in the microwave. Reading my mail while my lunch was in the toaster oven, I slowly made my way over to the garbage pail. About the time I got about 1/2 way through my mail for the day, I thought of something. I´m doing it! I´m really doing what other copywriters have told me about. Have you ever heard anybody talk about how you need to visualize your prospect standing over the paper basket with the mail in their hand? And how you need to somehow captivate them enough to actually read your mail and not throw it in the trash? Well that’s exactly what I was doing, and the only piece of mail that got more than 5 seconds of my time was a check and a business magazine (both of which I’m obviously interested in). Ok, so its an odd thought, but I wanted to let you know that if you had ever heard the phrase...they were telling the truth. People really do stand over their paper basket with the mail in their hand. Which brings me to a very important point… How can you grab a reader´s attention and captivate them long enough to read it and not send it packing with the rest of the trash? And the answer is…tell a story. If you noticed, at the beginning of this article I told a story, a glimpse into a few minutes of my actual life. If you’re reading this still, you were interested by it – probably because you wanted to find out the end of the story. That’s exactly what you need to do for your prospects. Tell a story, a story that they will be interested in reading. Start out by giving them something that involves them and makes them feel the NEED to read all the way to the end to see what happens. Work to make the story so captivating that they must read it, and make sure that you 'hint' about your product. For example: In the story you could explain a specific problem some person was having, then how they came over that problem and how your product helped them do it. This is a very general technique used in copywriting, but I wanted this article to be very short, however it did get a bit longer than I expected. The Garbage Pail Copywriting Technique might seem very simple, and honestly, it really is but it has helped me out and I wanted to teach it to you. |
